Two more drabbles to go, this one mutated into an actual fic. Am now spoonless. No clue where the creative spurt actually came from. This drabble challenge has stretched me, though, because I've branched out into new fandoms fic-wise; Doctor Who, Torchwood, Supernatural, and now the Discworld. :D
Title: How to Successfully and Repeatedly Get Yourself into Dire Situations (a Doctor Who/Discworld crossover, 1/1) Author: Red Rating: PG Characters: Tenth Doctor, Donna Noble, various Discworld characters - finding them is half the fun. :D Spoilers: Lots of Discworld, very little of Doctor Who, though this is set just prior to Midnight. Disclaimers: Doctor Who belongs to the BBC et al, the Discworld and all its inhabitants belong to Terry Pratchett. The headache is entirely mine. XD Summary: The Doctor takes Donna to the Discworld, where she's not having the best time ever.
Notes: This is dedicated to the fantastic neuroticred. You requested a drabble, and it kind of... grew. O_O The original drabble request was "The Doctor & Donna show up outside the Watch house. For some reason the interest 'canon powershot' also jumped out at me". Not exactly outside the Watch house, but I decided Vimes wouldn't approve of blowing things up so close to home. The Canon PowerShot interest is actually the line of camera I have, but I think the Discworld version is far more entertaining. :D
I just saw that one of my friends and repeat customers just posted a sweet review of my shop over on her beauty blog, A Babe In The Woods. Here it is. It made me all blushy and stuff.
But really, things have been great. I love hearing feedback from my customers, and I got a great email from my largest order to date last night that made me bounce in my chair. I love that I get to do something that is both personally fulfilling and brings a little bit of sparkle to someone else's day.
So yeah, the bride loved the design. Very exciting. Will be making the other two just as soon as I buy more 26g wire. I really should buy a full ounce of it soon, as 24g is just a scootch too big to fit through some of the teeny briolettes I've been working with lately.
Anyway-- I'm going to Faire opening weekend after all! I will be there on Sunday-- looking forward to seeing familiar faces and making new friends. If you see me, say hi. If you know interesting people, introduce me, please. I'm always looking to meet interesting people, and faire people number among the most interesting people out there. I've already figured out what I'm gonna wear-- hthottie likened the first weekend of Faire to the first day of school, and she couldn't have been more right. I've been going since I was about seven or so, but when I was little, my parents never had enough money to rent me a costume or what have you. But I always oohed and aaaahed at the pretty costumes I saw. Now that I'm older, I go to faire three or four times a season, and dressing up for faire is something I really enjoy and relish. J is coming on Sunday, too-- he's also a total Renfaire nerd who's been coming for years, but has never gotten his own garb. This must be changed, and I am to have him kilted by October. Funny story-- I actually saw him at faire last year while we were milling about. I shouted his name and he looked straight at me, but didn't recognize me. I got closer and gave him a big hug and he finally realized who the flower-laden bellydancer was. He said that he had no idea in retrospect what we talked about, as the only thing going through his mind was, "keep your eyes on her face... keep your eyes on her face..." Hee. So chivalrous, that boy.
Faire also really piqued my interest in bellydancing. I was just a baby dancer with maybe two months of classes under my belt when I saw Kittarina (who dances with Gypsophilia) and Stacy (who dances with The Rogues) perform. They both seemed so joyous and playful and I was completely mesmerized. I more or less decided right then and there that I wanted to get to that level someday, too. Going to faire and seeing the dancing-- the real dancing, not just the bellybunny gyrating-- is so much fun for me, and I look forward to it every year. I even danced a little myself with some friends last year; hopefully I'll work up the nerve again this year.
Anyhow, tonight J and I are going to an Orioles game. I'm all bedecked in orange. Wish us home runs!
I had an idea in my head, but I couldn't get it done in time.. I wanted to have him be a nude model with a pullip painting him in yellow, but eh .. Yeah.. totally not enough time for me to make the set I wanted in my head.. Always seems that way that there is something in my head I can't quite accomplish.
Anyways.. I like it, and I don't, the colors are more predominate in this one, but I did really like the first take I had on the theme, but I didn't know how well having a blurred face would do. :
Hopefully I get more creative if I make it to the next round.
These pics are very cool. The Silent Hill fans on my friends list really should check them out, because to me it feels like I'm stepping into that world when I see the pics. Safe for work.
Chez Jason. Would like to mark that I finally got the sapphire and pearl bridesmaid's necklace done in a way I am completely satisfied with. I get the bride's approval/feedback tomorrow, then make two more. I'll take pictures when I do, but truly, after being frustrated for about two weeks, I finally hit on the right combination. I decided on a simple, pendant-focused piece with tiny, ornate details. 2mm-4mm ivory pearls clustered atop a faceted, night-dark 15mm dumpling-cut sapphire briolette. The delicate sterling chain is accented by four tiny pearls and eight 2mm sapphires that fade from deep blue to light periwinkle. The dresses she chose are very classic and frill-free with clean lines-- navy blue and V-necked-- so I think the necklaces will accent that perfectly, drawing in the eye but not distracting.
So happy about it There's nothing like that final sigh of relief when an important commission ends up just right.
It was, for the most part, a great weekend. Got tons of cuddle time in, watched some good movies, and created over 30 items for my shop. Mostly earrings, but some nice necklaces in there, as well. When the update goes live in about two weeks, there will likely be about 55 items total-- I haven't touched any of the Timekeeper's Daughter stuff yet. So yay, a nice big update to kick off Autumn. I find myself daydreaming about things to be made during the day; scribbling notes in my notepad-- when I get home and set things out, the only thing I have to do is the construction. I think it's part of why I've been so prolific lately. And I find the construction deeply satisfying. There's a sort of meditative quality to it. It's very relaxing to me, and more than a little addictive.
I've also now seen Atonement and The Notebook. The former was beautifully done and even though I've read the book, I found myself shocked at the ending. I always want it to be different. Like Briony, I suppose. The Notebook was okay; honestly, I don't get the hype about it. It's a good love story, and the actors did a great job of making that real. The costuming was terrific, and kudos to the writers for making the competition to the leading man a decent, sweet guy in his own right instead of a stock villain. But I suppose it just didn't wow me in the way I had been expecting. The end did make me well up a little, though. What can I say, I'm kind of a secret sap.
There was also more than a little bit of weirdness going on. Dixie left yesterday for a 10 day trip. I sat from my bed and watched as my floor lamp tipped itself over and shattered to tiny pieces. Last night, Jason came over. He went downstairs to get some water, and when he came back upstairs, I noticed a light still on downstairs. I mentioned that he hadn't turned the light off downstairs. He said he certainly had-- he navigated the living room in pitch black and even ran into the sofa. We walked downstairs, and the living room lamp was on and turned all the way up. There was also a very noticeable scent of singed hair in the air. So yeah. It seems our household entity would like some attention. Or something. I'm not sure, but I'd like to find out before any more lamps get broken. And until things start calming down, with Dixie gone, I'll be staying at Jason's. It doesn't feel particularly malicious or anything, but still-- I don't like being startled quite so often.
In other news, Jason said he figured out my pirate name while he was massaging my legs last night. Ladies, you know how you always miss one or two hairs right around the ankles when shaving, and then they get really long? My pirate name, according to my boyfriend, is "Anklebeard the Fierce." Fear me.
“Hey, I totally forgot about this function. But, I just wanted everyone to know that we're in Shin-Yokohama [?], and Mom and I haven't killed each other yet, and everything's going well despite the fact that I led us to the wrong hotel and... we pretty much had to walk 20 minutes out of our way and then get on a crowded...bus and...not a bus, a train and it pretty much sucked! But! Everything's going well and um... hope everything's going well with you guys. I'll try and...touch...base, you know, every once in a while but so far so good. Bye!”
Ten minutes after I made last night's post, the power blew. I spilled pink wax on my carpet while lighting candles. I deposited an entire handful of Swarovski crystals into the wrong bin while trying to clean by candlelight. And this morning, my floor lamp tipped over by itself and shattered itsy bitsy glass shards everywhere, one of which promptly imbedded itself in my toe.
